So you didn’t stick to your summer workout plan as much as you wanted to. Just because the hot weather is leaving doesn’t mean your exercise goals have to leave also! Fall is the perfect time to start a fitness program and get back in shape, and you’re more likely to create good habits that’ll stick out the winter months.

Take advantage of the slightly cooler weather. Walking, jogging, cycling and hiking are all great outdoor activities that can still be enjoyed in autumn. If you have a beach near you, kayaking and canoeing are also fun (and calorie-burning) options.

If you’re not motivated by the more “conventional” workouts, the start of a new season is a great time to try something new. Often gyms or other fitness centers have specials when fall rolls around. Pick out a new class with a friend – having another person there will help keep you accountable for attaining your goals.

Fall is a great opportunity to be more intentional about incorporating exercise into your daily routine. Walk during your lunch break or while waiting for your child’s soccer practice to end. Jog or do sit-ups during commercials of your favorite show. Choose activities that have a convenience factor, whether that means they’re close to home or work, or you pick a time when you’re least likely to be interrupted.

Keeping fit is tough work, but once you find a routine that fits your interests and lifestyle best, it won’t feel like such a chore. Remember to be consistent in your exercise – it takes the body roughly 30 days to adapt to new habits, so if you can keep up your healthy choices through the next month, you’re in good shape already.
